Mother's Day 2010

I'll never forget the first time someone read a story of mine and I could tell that they truly were impressed. It's what made me believe that I could pursue writing in the first place. I could see the spark of interest on that nice lady's face. Thanks Mom!

Of all the "made up" and commercialized "hallmark" holidays, this one is my favorite. Not because I am a mother, but because I really truly appreciate my own mother. I have always wondered if I will be the mom that my mother is. She took care of everything, the whole family revolves around her, as it should do. Her special way of letting us know what's what. Her tireless efforts to make sure we got to the game on time with a clean uniform and all the necessary equipment. How she made those chocolate cookies taste so good, that she fed to us and all the neighborhood kids. How she managed to know where we put everything, I'll never know. How we always know that no matte what, she loved us and would be there for us. Those are just some of the things I love about my own mother. Which is why I make sure that she knows on this day especially, how much I love and appreciate her.

Mother's Day falls on the second Sunday in May. It's thought that the idea of celebrating Mothers goes as all the way back to the England in the 1600s, when there was a holiday called Mothering Sunday. There were a few other variations in between, but it was President Woodrow Wilson who made Mother's Day a national holiday on May 14, 1914.

Since then Mother's Day has become a day to celebrate and cherish your mother and all the special mothers in your life. This could be your mother, grandmother, wife, sister, or someone else whom treated you like her own child. In America, we celebrate by giving gifts, usually flowers.

Why do we give flowers? I'm not sure but I can tell you why I do. My mom loves flowers. They are beautiful, smell nice, and decorate her home for a week or so. I used to give her other gifts, little mementos or tchotchkes, until I started receiving them for and realized that sooner or later you run out of shelf space. And you have to dust them. Also, there have been times, I won't name any names, that I have been bestowed with a knick-knack that I might have picked up and joked about at the store. My Mom would feel it her duty to proudly display any gift she received. Which gives me an idea for a joke.

After a long cold winter, flowers are just the thing to brighten her up day, and let her know that you appreciate her. And that makes me feel good.
