Young children love to give gifts to their Mother. And Mother's Day is no exception. The problem is that young children have little buying power. And this may be a good thing.

For young children, creating gifts with their own hands can be a much remembered and treasured experience. If you are an aunt, a family friend, or a grandmother consider helping a child craft a gift for his or her Mother for Mother's Day. You may find it a treasured experience yourself.

As a grandmother, and when my grandchildren were young, I helped them create gifts for their parents for a number of occasions, including Mother's Day.

One year, I and two grand-daughters, made satin drawer sachets for Mother's Day. It is important to let the child help in planning and do as much of each step as possible. In this case, we chose the fabric and embellishments together, did the cutting, used the sewing machine for all but the final touches, and then put the final polish on with hand stitching.

Though these two grand-daughters are now very young adults, I remember the experience vividly and so do they.

In this case, once the cutting was done (carefully supervised) they took turns at the sewing machine. Because of their age, they each took a turn sitting in my lap at the sewing machine, while they operated it, so I could carefully observe every move and make sure no fingers came in contact with the needle.

Yes, a little patience was needed, because each girl wanted to be first, but on the whole it was a great experience for all. As they finished their work with the last few hand stitches, the anticipation increased. They could hardly wait to give their gifts and found it difficult to keep their secret until Mother's Day arrived.

What a wonderful gift for all. I received the gift of watching my grand-daughters craft a handmade gift with love and purposed effort. My grand-daughters gained the gift of giving something of themselves and through their own efforts. And the Mother, my daughter-in-law, received nice fragrant gifts for her lingerie drawers, along with the knowing that her daughters had put their hearts into thoughts of pleasing her on Mother's Day.

Helping a favorite child craft a gift for Mother's Day might give you the treasured gift of a lifetime memory for you and for them, and make you a special hero in the child's eyes. This is not limited to girls. My grandson also was included, and projects were geared more to his interests.

Do you have a special child who could use your help in creating a lasting memory for Mother's Day?
